Public record
How do you check a clinician?
Look the person up on the state licensing board website. A profile on the service website is not proof.
What are the steps?
- Write down the full name.Include a middle name or initial when shown.
- Confirm the role.Doctor, nurse practitioner and physician assistant records may sit in different places.
- Open the state board website. The further reading page links to a national list of state medical boards. From there, open your state board and use its name search.
- Match the details.Check that the licence is active, that the state and job title match, and whether the board has ever disciplined the person. A discipline record is a formal step the board took against the licence.
What does a clean record prove?
It shows that the board lists the person and has not posted any discipline against them. It does not tell you whether the person is the right fit for you.
As of September 2026, what counts is a licence or other permission from the board of the state you are in when the visit happens, so search that state's board, even if the clinician's office is elsewhere.
